My Story

Mason Tran grew up in South Dakota, where a strong public school music program played a defining role in his early success and nurtured his love for performance on the oboe, English horn and bassoon. During his senior year in high school he won the principal oboe chair in the All-State Orchestra and the principal bassoon chair in the All-State Band, a first for any student musician in the state. He went on to study music performance at Luther College, where he was a member of the Luther College Symphony Orchestra. Tran later completed a one-year residency with San Antonio Symphony’s former principal oboist, Mark Ackerman, where he gained invaluable reed making and tone production skills. During his residency he performed with San Antonio’s leading classical chamber music ensemble, Olmos Ensemble, and was a guest performing artist at the University of Texas at San Antonio. He is also a two-time semi-finalist in the International London Concerto Competition and has had the privilege of sharing the stage with world-class musicians, including violinist Midori Goto. Today, he freelances with orchestras and chamber ensembles throughout the Greater Boston area.

Mason lives on the South Shore of Massachusetts with his partner, Matt, and their rescue dog Gio, a heeler mix. Outside of music, his most recent academic focus has been in legal studies, earning a bachelor’s degree in criminology from Westfield State University.
